Learn how Friel connects aerobic capacity, threshold, economy, overload and recovery to explain improvement in cycling.
Training causes a disturbance. Enhancing depends on the response to this disturbance over time. This difference between stimulation and adaptation explains why accumulating work does not guarantee proportional progress.
Friel organizes the chapter around the components of performance and the principles that guide its modification. The utility is to transform “need more conditioning” into specific questions.
Aerobic capacity: it is related to the maximum oxygen that the organism can use. It is a potential reference, but does not alone explain how long the cyclist supports a pace or the cost to produce certain power.
Threshold: helps to characterize sustainable intensities and effort response transitions. In the method, improving production associated with threshold has great relevance for situations of prolonged effort.
Economy: two athletes can produce the same power with different physiological costs. Coordination and the way to perform the movement enter into this discussion.
The components interact. A high VO2max value does not replace the ability to transform this potential into performance in the duration and format of the competition. It is also not correct to interpret every power gain as an increase in VO2max.
Frequency informs how many sessions are held; duration, how much time they occupy; intensity, how demanding they are in relation to individual capacity. Changing any of these variables can change the stimulus.
Imagine two weeks of six hours. In one, most is light. In the other, there are several demanding stretches. The volume is similar, but the required load and recovery can be different. Hours are not a complete measure of the training effect.
The same goes for distribution. Three short cycling workouts and a long cycling workout can add up the same time without developing exactly the same capabilities. The continuous task and spacing between exhibitions matter.
Overload means to offer a sufficient demand to challenge the current state. Progression is to modify this demand over time. Increasing everything simultaneously makes it difficult both to absorb and interpret the answer.
Specificity means bringing the stimuli closer to the relevant requirements. For a time trial, supporting production has a different role than responding to successive attacks in a criteriaium. Individuality remembers that the same session does not produce the same response in distinct people.
Reversibility explains why developed capabilities require some continuity. This does not require maximizing all during the year; it helps distinguish the development dose from the maintenance dose.
After a demanding block, a cyclist feels temporarily slower. This can reflect accumulated fatigue without demonstrating that the program has failed. But also not competition that a great adaptation is guaranteed.
It is necessary to observe what happens after recovery and compare relevant indicators. If the difficulty persists, the plan needs to be revised instead of justifying any worsening as an inevitable part of the process.
This is the usefulness of adaptation models: organizing hypotheses. They do not offer a clock that determines the exact time at which every athlete will be ready again.
Effective training combines a directed stimulus with conditions to respond to it. The decision about increasing load should consider the ability that is intended to change and the response that has been observed.
More work is a dose change; better performance is a result to be verified. Between the two there is specificity, continuity, recovery and individual differences. It is this relationship that underpins the following practical chapters.
